Kitty Hawk police have charged an 81-year-old Kill Devil Hills man in connection with Monday’s pedestrian crash that killed a Virginia couple vacationing on the Outer Banks for spring break.

David Archer was charged with driving left of center and two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, police Chief Joel C. Johnson said Friday.

Alan and Holly Nicolette of Mechanicsville, Virginia, were walking along the shoulder of N.C. 12 near Maynard Street in Kitty Hawk with their two children, 6 and 8, and Alan’s parents when a pickup truck veered across the road and struck four of the six. The child and Alan’s father suffered minor injuries. Alan and Holly Nicolette were fatally injured, both dying a short time after the accident.

Johnson said it appears Archer either suffered a medical condition or fell asleep at the wheel.

“Alcohol was not a factor and it was not intentional nor was there any malice,” Johnson said.

Holly Nicolette was an elementary school teacher in Hanover County and her husband a businessman.

“This is a very unfortunate and sad incident and we ask that you please pray for the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time,” Johnson said.
