Fireworks in Corolla still on for July 3, could be only show on the Outer Banks

At a budget work session Wednesday, the Currituck County Board of Commissioners decided that this year’s fireworks show to celebrate Independence Day at the Whalehead Club in Corolla will still be held as planned on July 3.

And the board announced they will also seek to hold a fireworks show at a location on the Currituck mainland.

Because July 4 is on a Saturday this year, the celebration had already been planned for the day before to avoid compounding traffic issues on the traditional weekly rental turnover day.

While Kill Devil Hills has not made a decision about the fireworks display planned for Avalon Pier on the Fourth of July, all other Independence Day celebrations on the Outer Banks have been cancelled for this year.

Avon, Duck, Manteo, Nags Head and Ocracoke organizers have cited a combination of uncertainty about finances and what restrictions on large gatherings could still be in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
