A woman and her school-aged son were killed in a fire early Sunday morning on Pine Grove Trail in Kill Devil Hills.

Firefighters were called to the 200 block of Pine Grove Trail at 4:25 a.m. and arrived to find the converted apartment building engulfed in flames.

Neighbors said two of the families in the three-unit building got out safely, but a mother and her son did not, and were later found in the building’s attic.

“They were two beautiful people, I’ll tell you that,” said Mary Kennon, who lives directly across the street. Kennon said her grandson was good friends with the boy who died, and that the two had lived in the apartment for years.

Fire officials have not yet released the names of the victims.

Fire crews from Colington and Nags Head, along with the Kill Devil Hills Police Department and Dare County EMS assisted the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department at the scene.

The Kill Devil Hills Fire Marshal and Dare County Fire Marshal are investigating to determine the fire origin and cause.

Neighbors gathered near the fire scene late Sunday morning, expressing shock over the blaze.

“It went up so fast,” said Kennon, who said it doesn’t yet seem real. “It’s almost like looking at a TV.”
