Explosion rocks substation in Nags Head, cutting power to thousands

An explosion Sunday evening at a substation in Nags Head knocked out power to thousands of customers from the Jockey’s Ridge area south, including much of Roanoke Island.

The explosion happened at 7:16 p.m. at the substation located on West Lakeside Drive in the Whalebone Junction section of Nags Head.

Dominion Power was reporting nearly 7,500 customers without power as of 7:45 p.m.
