Hyde County reports first deaths from COVID-19; regional death toll now 79

Health officials have recorded the first deaths of Hyde County residents from COVID-19, leaving just Currituck as the only county in northeastern North Carolina to not yet lose a resident to the coronavirus.

The death of three Hyde County residents was reported Thursday afternoon, moving the death toll to 79 across the thirteen county region.

“This is heartbreaking to our agency, and the staff wish to convey our condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their loved ones,” said Hyde County Health Director Luana Gibbs.

Additional information about the three people who died was not released.

Pasquotank County has lost the most residents, 23, of any county in the northeast corner of the state, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. 2,803 residents of North Carolina have died since the pandemic started in mid-March.
