Several houses were evacuated Wednesday night on the north end of Roanoke Island due to an underground tank leaking propane gas nearby.

Fire crews were called to the 100 block of Canopy Lane just before 8 p.m. following the report of the propane leak.

Radio traffic indicated that homes just to the south of the leak had been cleared and the power was shut off as a precaution.
