N.C. 12 to remain closed on Pea Island, Ocracoke until at least 6 p.m.

The N.C. Department of Transportation says it will be 6 p.m. today at the earliest before N.C. 12 is reopened from Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe and on Ocracoke Island.

Ocean overwash continues eroding dunes and protective berms, despite the best efforts of crews working to clear sand and water from the road, NCDOT says. N.C. 12 is closed from the Basnight bridge to Rodanthe and on Ocracoke from the ferry terminal to the pony pens.

Hatteras and Ocracoke islands have experienced several days of coastal flooding during high tides thanks to several weather systems causing strong winds and churning seas and large surf.
