After originally being moved from Independence Day to Labor Day weekend due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town of Kill Devil Hills’ annual fireworks show will now celebrate the Wright Brothers first flight anniversary this month.

The fireworks will be launched at Avalon Pier on the evening on Thursday, Dec. 17, at dark, which is around 5:30 p.m.

A live video stream of the event is being explored.

Currituck County held the only Fourth of July fireworks show on the Outer Banks this year, while the rest of the displays in Nags Head, Manteo, Avon and Ocracoke were cancelled.

Kill Devil Hills Mayor Ben Sproul on Saturday morning said the Dec. 17 fireworks are still a go.
