Now that we’ve got 2020 behind us, let’s take a look at the headlines that received the most views on our website through the year. Here are the top five:
1. Outer Banks reopens in time for summer
Our most viewed story of the year was Dare County’s announcement that the Outer Banks would be reopening to visitors May 16 after access was restricted in March due to COVID-19 concerns.
2. Daylong backup due to bridge pileup
Traffic on the Outer Banks can get pretty thick in the summer. Add to that a pileup that closes the incoming lanes of the Wright Memorial Bridge on a Saturday morning in mid-July. That crash story was our second-most viewed article of the year.
3. Outer Banks lifeguard rescues body boarder from rip current
Our third most-clicked story of 2020 comes from Corolla, after a lifeguard spotted a body boarder in a rip current and pulled the person to safety. A Northern Virginia couple sent video and accolades to local authorities afterward.
4. Atlantic Ocean takes down Outer Banks beach house
The fourth most-viewed story happened in late May on Hatteras Island. Rough surf claimed a beach cottage in Rodanthe and put several others in peril.
5. Dare County restricts visitor access to the Outer Banks
Another pandemic story rounds out the top five, this one from March 17, when the bridges closed.
