Louisville man dies while kayaking along the Outer Banks

A 20-year-old man from Louisville, Kentucky died while kayaking with two other people in the Pamlico Sound off Hatteras Island on Tuesday.

According to a National Park Service news release, the incident happened near the Haulover Sound Access between Avon and Buxton in Cape Hatteras National Seashore at 1:37 p.m.

Three people were on the kayak when it capsized. Two of the individuals made it out of the water safely, and reported the third person missing.

Crews from Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, National Park Service rangers, Dare County Emergency Medical Services and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office responded.

Hatteras Island Rescue Squad located and retrieved the body with help from a visiting rescue diver. The man’s name has not been released.

“Their quick and professional response to this tragic incident is greatly appreciated by Cape Hatteras National Seashore,” said Michael Barber, public affairs specialist for the National Parks of Eastern North Carolina.
