Dare health officials report 109 COVID-19 cases since Friday

Dare County Health and Human Services reported 109 new COVID-19 cases between Friday and Sunday. Of those, 22 were vaccinated against the virus.

As cases continue to rise across the Outer Banks and the country, the FDA granted full approval Monday to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for those 16 and older. It is still available under emergency authorization use for children 12 to  15.

The first EUA, issued Dec. 11, for the Pfizer vaccine was based on safety and effectiveness data from a randomized, controlled, blinded ongoing clinical trial of thousands of individuals.

To support the FDA’s approval decision Monday, the FDA reviewed updated data from the clinical trial which supported the EUA and included a longer duration of follow-up in a larger clinical trial population.

Among the new cases in Dare County, 13 people are currently hospitalized, seven residents and six non-residents.
